Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral: What to Know Before Visiting

Before visiting, it helps to know practical details such as opening hours, location, entry rules, and nearby attractions to plan your trip efficiently.

The Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception, was constructed between 1863 and 1880 by French colonists. It was designed in a Romanesque style with materials imported from France, including red bricks and stained glass. The cathedral served as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City and stands as a reminder of the city's colonial past.

Its twin bell towers reach a height of 58 meters (190 feet), and the cathedral has become a symbol of the French influence on Vietnamese architecture and religion.

The cathedral is located at 01 Công xã Paris, Bến Nghé, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. It is situated in the city center, making it accessible by various transportation methods.

By taxi or Grab: Most drivers know the cathedral; the address or simply "Nhà thờ Đức Bà" is sufficient.

By public bus: Bus routes 01, 02, 03, 13, and 14 stop nearby.

Walking: If you are staying in District 1, the cathedral is within walking distance of Ben Thanh Market and the Saigon Central Post Office.

Plan your visit during less busy times like early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.

Saigon Notre-Dame Cathedral is open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Entry to the cathedral is free.

Visitors should dress respectfully as it is an active place of worship. Avoid wearing sleeveless tops, shorts, or revealing clothing. Photography inside the cathedral is usually allowed but keep noise to a minimum to respect those attending services.

Masses are held on Sundays and special holidays, so if you want to attend a service, check the schedule in advance. Non-worshippers can visit outside of mass times to avoid crowds.
