How to Get Around Saigon: Transport Options and Tips

Saigon's public transport system primarily consists of buses, motorbike taxis (xe ôm), and the upcoming metro. Buses are the most affordable way to travel, with over 130 routes covering the city and surrounding areas. A one-way ticket typically costs between 5,000 and 7,000 VND (about 0.20 - 0.30 USD).

The bus network operates from around 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Most buses have digital displays and air conditioning on major routes, but some older buses may not. You can pay cash directly to the driver or use a contactless card if available.

Motorbike taxis (xe ôm) are widely available and useful for short distances or places not easily accessible by bus. You can find xe ôm drivers at popular spots or book via apps like Grab.

The metro system is under construction and expected to start partial operations soon, initially covering Line 1 (Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien). This will add a fast and reliable option for commuters in the near future.

Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and GoViet (now Gojek) are the most popular methods for getting around Saigon, especially for foreigners. These apps provide motorbike taxis, car taxis, and even food delivery.

Using Grab is straightforward: download the app, set your pickup and drop-off locations, and choose between bike or car rides. Prices are displayed upfront, with motorbike rides usually costing between 20,000 and 50,000 VND ($0.85 - $2.15) for typical inner-city trips.

Tips for using ride-hailing apps:
- Always check the driver's rating and vehicle details.
- Use cashless payment within the app or have cash ready.
- Confirm your location with the driver, as street names can be confusing.

Ride-hailing apps offer a safer and more comfortable alternative to traditional taxis and xe ôm.

Traditional metered taxis remain widely available and are often preferred by visitors who want a direct, fixed-price ride without using apps. Reliable companies include Vinasun and Mai Linh. Both have green or white cars with clear branding.

Taxis start at around 12,000 VND (~$0.50) for the first kilometer and then about 11,000 - 14,000 VND per additional kilometer. Always ensure the meter is turned on.

Some tips to avoid scams:
- Use reputable companies only.
- Avoid taxis that refuse to use the meter.
- Confirm the estimated fare for longer trips before starting.

Taxis are a good choice for airport transfers or trips outside the city center.

Renting a motorbike is a popular way to get around Saigon for those comfortable with hectic traffic and Vietnamese driving styles. Daily rental prices start at around 120,000 VND ($5) for basic scooters. More powerful bikes cost upwards of 200,000 VND ($8.50) per day.

Before renting:
- Confirm the bike's condition and brakes.
- Check if the rental includes a helmet, which is mandatory by law.
- Carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) or Vietnamese license; police may stop foreigners.

Traffic in Saigon can be chaotic, with many motorbikes weaving between cars. Beginners should avoid rush hours (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM) and busy intersections.

First-time visitors should keep these tips in mind when getting around Saigon:

• Learn basic Vietnamese phrases: Words like ‘dừng ở đây’ (stop here) and ‘bao nhiêu tiền?’ (how much?) can help in taxis and markets.
• Use Google Maps or local apps: Apps like Grab and Moovit help plan routes and estimate travel times.
• Carry small change in VND: Many buses and taxis do not give large bills back.
• Stay alert when crossing streets: Traffic flows continuously; walk steadily and avoid sudden stops.
• Avoid peak rush hours: Traffic jams between 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM can double travel time.
• Check weather forecasts: Rainy season (May to November) can cause delays and slippery roads.
