Simple Vietnamese phrases, cash in small bills, and pointing at dishes or photos make ordering cheap food in Saigon manageable for first-time visitors.

Knowing basic food words such as phở (noodle soup), bánh mì (sandwich), cơm (rice), and gà (chicken) helps decode menus, many of which are in Vietnamese only. If unsure, pointing at the food you want or using photos on smartphones is effective.

Most street vendors only accept cash, so carrying 20,000-50,000 VND notes is advisable. Cards are rarely accepted at stalls. Watching how food is prepared can indicate freshness and hygiene—busy stalls with quick turnover usually serve fresher meals.

Apps like Google Translate assist with menu translation and communicating with vendors. Prices at markets may sometimes be negotiable, but fixed prices are common in well-known eateries.

Choosing busy stalls with visible fresh ingredients, avoiding raw items, and drinking bottled water help maintain food safety while eating cheap food in Saigon.

High customer turnover usually means food is prepared fresh, reducing the risk of contamination. Observe how vendors handle food: whether they wash hands or use gloves, and if cooking is done over high heat.

Avoid raw or undercooked dishes, especially seafood or meats. Opt for cooked options like noodle soups, grilled meats, and fried snacks. Bottled water is widely available and recommended over tap water.

Using hand sanitizer before eating street food is practical, particularly since many vendors lack handwashing stations. At Bến Thành Market, indoor food stalls often maintain better hygiene and operate until 8pm, making them suitable for safer evening meals.
