Saigon Coffee Culture: Best Cafes and Brewing Styles

Saigon coffee culture blends French colonial influences with Vietnamese traditions, creating a distinct style centered around strong, dark coffee often paired with sweetened condensed milk. The typical serving is cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with milk) or cà phê đen đá (iced black coffee).

Many locals drink coffee multiple times daily, often sitting for hours at street-side plastic stools. The city’s cafes range from simple street vendors charging 15,000-25,000 VND (about $0.65-$1.10 USD) per cup to upscale specialty coffee shops where a single pour-over can cost 80,000-120,000 VND ($3.50-$5.20 USD).

Saigon’s coffee scene is also evolving, with younger generations embracing international brewing methods such as pour-over, siphon, and cold brew alongside traditional drip filters.

Phin filter drip coffee is the most well-known brewing method in Saigon. The metal phin is placed on top of a cup and coffee slowly drips through, producing a strong and concentrated brew. This method takes 4-5 minutes per cup and is usually served hot or iced.

Espresso-based drinks have become popular in modern cafes, including lattes, cappuccinos, and Americanos. These are often made with high-quality Arabica beans sourced from Vietnam’s Central Highlands.

Cold brew is gaining traction, especially in warmer months. Cold brew coffee is steeped for 12-24 hours, resulting in a smoother, less acidic taste.

Siphon coffee, a theatrical brewing style using vacuum pressure, can be found in specialty cafes for those wanting to try something different. It produces a clean and aromatic cup.

Look for local cafes that provide details on bean origin and roast date if you want a more refined tasting take part in.
